Sancai-Glazed Figure of a Lokapala

  • Watson Pl, Framingham, MA
  • 1

The early Chinese often stationed bizarre creatures — combining elements of real and imaginary animals — at or near entrances to burial chambers to ward off evil and danger. Such figures have surprisingly standardized features, such as ogre heads with flared ears, bulging eyes, and banded or twisted horns. Earthenware figures of the Tang dynasty were often fired with three-colored glazes known as sancai — typically blue, green and golden brown. The un-glazed faces and ears would have been painted after firing. This Sancai-Glazed Figure of a Lokapala is done with Green and Golden Brown on Earthenware Clay He stands about 12 to 13 inches tall.
